Aim: Students practice sentence transformation by applying reported speech rules.
Previous knowledge: Students need to understand how reported speech works. You may show models or use the examples provided in the student's texbooks.
Materials: a piece of paper per student
Procedure:
A) Students work alone
- Make sure every student has a piece of paper.
- Students write their names at the top of the page.
- Students write the name of a student in the class at the bottom of the page.
- Students write sentences on the page. These sentences are aimed at the student whose name is at the bottom of the page. Ask the student to write sentences in present simple, past, or whatever tense they have studied. You may ask them to write some questions too.
- Students give their piece of paper to any person in the class EXCEPT the student whose name is at the bottom of the page.
- Tell the students that 2 days later, they meet a friend and they need to tell him/her about what the student whose name is on top wanted to know about the student at the bottom or what he/she said to him/her . They take turns to explain adding the necessary transformations.
- Students start their conversation by saying: Two days ago I heard a conversation between ... and ...
- Students need to invent the answers.
EXAMPLE:
LUCY:
- Do you like french fries?
- What did you do yesterday?
- I know you smoke in the toilets of the school
- Will you come with me to the party tomorrow?
Lucy gives her piece of paper to a student named Lucas
The conversation between Lucas and his classmate (any other student) goes as follows:
LUCAS: Two days ago I heard a conversation between Lucy and Roy. Lucy wanted to know if Roy liked french fries and what he had done on Monday. Roy said the he did not like fries and didn't want to give away any information about his Moday routine. Then Lucy told him that she knew he smoked int the school but he denied it.
ETC.
Extension:
Students exchange information to see if their guesses were right!
